GIMP 2.2

Toolbox Configuration

Toolbox configuration in gimp-2.2 is so easy, it barely justifies a whole tutorial to demonstrate. It is cool enough for a handful of screenshots though:

Default Toolbox

When first opening up this new gimp, right after the User Install stuff (the orange screen of configuration ....) the toolbox you see should look like the one pictured here.

From the toolbox: File -->Dialogs -->Tools ....

Tools Dialog

One of the more simple dialogs, to display a tool in the toolbox, all you need to do is to toggle the eye icon to the left of the tool icon and name.

There is one big reset button at the bottom of the dialog in case you would like to start over.

The Tools Dialog is dockable; so it can be more easily used to change the tools all the time if your layout and workflow need it.

Toolbox With All of the Tools

If you toggle all of the tools to be displayed in the Tools Dialog, you get a default toolbox (meaning it has not been stretched from its original default size) that looks like this.

My gimp-2.2 Toolbox

A user of TheGIMP since gimp-1.0, my toolbox looks like this. I have several things docked underneath this, including the Tool Options Dialog; but this is my Toolbox. I like it, in this shape it reminds me of a real life toolbox.

Also note that I decided to use TheGIMP in 1998 over all of the other options (for some very good reasons -- and at that time, not too many ethical reasons). This toolbox can be configured for people who made the mistake of learning other applications approach to the same job; something the other applications have not managed to do at all.

So, configure your Toolbox the way you feel most comfortable. Probably in future gimps there will be much more you can do with this configuration. When these new options are made available, understand that it is not because what you think you need is the correct thing. No sir. These options will be available to you because the developers can do it.

With that said, please enjoy this new gimp. It is cool.
