These preferences set a few default behaviours or options that will be shared by several tools.

Guide and Grid Snapping

This preference determines how close your selection tools, path tool or crop tool need to be to a grid line or a guide for the tool to "magnetically" land on the guide/grid location. (The "Snap to Grid" needs to be enabled for individual images via the menu View ->Snap to Grid or for all images via the Image Window preferences and will work even if the grid is not displayed.)

It is difficult to explain with words, screen shot demonstration and an encouragement for you to play with them yourself to get a feel for what would be useful to you.

Finding Contiguous Regions This controls the default Threshold setting for the Fuzzy Select and Select by Color Tools.
