Resource Consumption

If TheGIMP is not working as well as you think it should on your computer, this would be the preferences which would probably help. Everyone is using a different computer with different sorts of image work. Take your best guess and try that when these defaults don't work for you.

There is an excellent document about Tile cache size that can be read by users of TheGIMP or any other software application even (I had the experience to see how this explained the reason that Photoshop was interfering with Outlook on Windows, it is that beautifully written about how computer memory works ...).

Image Thumbnails

I reset this option and restarted TheGIMP a few times to get screen shots of the options.

Saving Images

This confirmation can be annoying but it can also save you a lot of work.

In Gimp2 it gives a time reference to help remember what you were doing. In this example, it took only 23 seconds to make a change to wilber and acquire the screen shot....
