Create Docks and Tabs

Disclaimer

I am using a gnu/linux operating system, xfree to draw my computer display and Xfce to determine how my windows behave and a theme (Platinum) to tell them how to look. I get all of this software from Debian testing. TheGIMP pictured and discussed here was acquired from cvs on 2005-01-10 (January 10, 2005 or 10 January 2005). This is all I can talk honestly about and get screenshots of.

Docks

Many of the TheGIMPs dialogs have the ability to be attached to each other vertically. This ability is called Docking.

The "dockable dialogs" have a few identifying features:

  1. The thick area in the window outline which highlights itself when it recognizes a dock.
  2. Buttons to manage the dialogs contained within the dock.
  3. The title of the dialog.

The Toolbox is a special case where it can only dock dialogs below it.

Your theme and window manager might draw these features differently than they are pictured here.

With the mouse, click on the title of the dialog you wish to dock and drag that to either the upper portion or the lower portion of the dialog you wish to dock. (Or the lower portion of the Toolbox).

The receiving dialog tells you it recognizes a new dock by changing color the color of the thick dock line. In this demonstration, the thick dock line turns blue.

Additional docks can now be added to this dock in the same way.

The area of a GIMP dock can be adjusted by using the mouse on the sides (1) or on the corners (2). The curser will change when it is hovering over an area that will affect the area of the dock (or even just a single dialog). Click and drag and TheGIMP will change this area within the windows ability. The area within the dock can be changed by dragging on the area marked with dots in between the dialogs (3). The curser changes when hovering over this area as well.

Tabs

TheGIMP has three pre-assembled single docks of information accessed at <Toolbox> -->File -->Dialogs -->Create New Dock.... Displayed here is the Misc. Dock. If you are using a browser with javascript enabled, you should be able to click on the tabs and see in html how the tabs work within TheGIMPs docks.

Tabbing TheGIMP dialogs together fills the docks with dialogs. You can make groups of tabs useful to you and dock them together as best fits your work flow.

Add tabs by grabbing the title with the mouse, dragging it to the title area of the destination dock or the other tabs and releasing it when the receiving window shows a highlighted outline.

You can also add tabs to a dock or a dialog by using the menu button.

dock-gtk-addtab

The menu found there offers many ways to configure each of the tabbed dialogs, as well as the means to add new tabs.
