carol.gimp.orggimp and arttin cans |
Simple tools and filtersUsing only gradients and the blend tool, bump mapping and map to object filters you can easily make a photo-realistic tin can. |
Fairly simple to make with TheGIMP, I made these photo-realistic tin can to illustrate a whiney short story I was writing for secretaries that have too much technology to play with. The story never got written, but the cans are neat anyways. There is a low-tech communication devise that we made as children that involved connecting two tin cans with a string. Sound waves actually do travel down the string and become more amplified in the cans. TheGIMP can make the can look right, not sound the same yet though.

Levels Enhanced Contrast |
I used the blend tool and the Brushed Aluminium gradient (included in TheGIMP's stock gradients) to start my "tin can" with. Using the levels tool I made the colors appear (to me) more tin like.

![]() bumped |
Using the Blend Tool and Flare Glow Angular 1 gradient (included in TheGIMP's stock gradients) I made a layer to use as a bump map.

Blend Tool Again |
![]() end piece |
Unless you want to limit the view, the Map to Cylinder plug-in needs an end piece. Using the blend tool and the Radial shape with the same gradient used to make the bump map can make a layer that will work well enough.
|
Rotate and SaveThe Map to Object plug-in can rotate and move the shaped layers around in the image space. |
