This is a comparison more than a tutorial.

Using TheGIMP on droppings

First I masked the droppings from the image and displaced a copy below it to show the metal instead.

I used clone tool on that lower image; then I started to paste little pieces of the image, including some new letters and letter parts.

Since the displacement worked better on one side than the other, I masked the two sides off and worked on them individually.

Mostly I got bored trying to fix things with TheGIMP and decided to see what would happen if I used soap and water and removed the droppings the old fashioned way....
