Mathmap

Mathmap is definately one of the niftier plug-ins that is available for GIMP. Once it is installed, it locates itself into the menus as is shown here.

It took some doing to get the mathmap plug-in working with my gimp-2.3 because of how I have liberated its build from libtool. Then, it took a while to work through the information that is online about how to make these images with this plug-in. Then it took more time than you might first think to get an image that will work.

The nice thing is that the script that makes Mathmap make these Escheresque images was already written before I started. This how to is about how to prepare a desktop image to work with that script and that plug-in. It should be helpful to those attempting to use their photographs for the same type of image.

In my defense, the how-tos were already long and too complicated compared to what I thought they would be when I started this.

Installing Mathmap

This plug-in has been a constant source of humiliation for me. Starting in 2001 or so when Tommer first mentioned it to me and showed what he was doing with it.

These tutorials/howtos are supposed to be more user oriented, so I tried to put all of the "mathy" things along with my own angst about my situation on a separate page here which I (kind of) gave the title my lament. Back in the dark ages when I learned calculus and many of the other things that were supposed to apply to a bachelors of science degree in mathematics -- all of that learning was all done with pen on paper. The computer experience was completely separate from that. I had at that time, beautiful notation handwriting for doing math homeworks which might be interfering with translating that knowlege and skill into making the computer do those same things. Possibly, the time spent in the years that followed, not having the creditials to do what I have and had successfully done probably did not help this process.

If you had undergrad calculus classes in a university like I did, you might recognize the Summations or Sigma Notation that they used for the proofs being used by mathmap to make many of the very beautiful images that will be pointed at from here.

Installing Mathmap

MathMap Cocoa
From the website "MathMap Cocoa is the result of porting the MathMap GIMP plugin by Mark Probst to Mac OS X and providing it with an advanced Aqua GUI."
Mathmap for Windows GIMP
There is a forum style how-to install those dlls within a tutorial about how to use the plug-in.
Mathmap for GNU/Linux GIMP
The MathMap GIMP Plug-In at the time that this was written had available the source and rpms for i386 Fedora Core 6 & x86-64 and a i386 deb for Ubuntu. I had to build my own for my gimp-2.3 on x86-64 Debian to use and I wrote about some of the problems doing that here.
