There are a few really excellent collections of Droste Effect Mathmap Filtered Chess Boards online. You won't find any here.
That doesn't mean that playing with a GIMP made grid isn't useful, educational and entertaining:
Filters/Render/Pattern/Checkerboard will make a board to play with. This plug-in uses the foreground and background colors from the Toolbox.
You can make them prettier with Filters/Render/Pattern/Grid.

Going beyond the image within the image, the script for that plug-in makes some of the most beautiful swirls and is very very addictive. If you are late to the party like I was and maybe you do not have a super great camera and a really clean bookshelf to play with, or gardens with flowers, or friends with gardens with flowers, you can still find great images online that are licensed to use.

I would never do this to my desktop or my very lovely handmade and built by me gtk-demo, but it sure makes a pretty image out of a pretty web page.
